Unveiling the Hijab: A Comprehensive Guide to Different Types

Over the centuries, hijabs go through their own evolutions and styles from Islam and various cultures around the world. Many people can identify you simply by your hijab style or color. Hijab styles vary in style, color, length, and material of fabric but all possess the same purpose. From the Hijab to the Abaya, we all have our own path with hijab and wear one of these styles. We will discuss and go over a comprehensive guide to all types of hijabs. It is okay to take baby steps into each type of hijab, but essentially it is more important to understand the differences first. Let's begin!

Shayla

The Shayla is a long rectangular scarf wrapped around the head loosely or pinned with magnets or pins. This style is popular with the gulf region.  Also very popular in the west. It looks modern and relaxed. It is great for beginners who are just starting to wear hijab.

 The Hijab

The Hijab is the standard and most common hijab style that covers the neck and face securely while leaving the face clear open. This is the most common style for women around the world who identify as being Muslim.

Why choose it: It is the standard style for Muslim women all over the world. It works with any outfit.

Al Amira

The Amira hijab (my personal favorite) is a two piece style with a fitting cap that is close to a tube like scarf that pulls over your head. It is extremely easy to throw on and makes it easy to wear for daily routine.

The Khimar

The Khimar is a full-length cloak (Cape) that covers the entire head to the lower body till waist, usually a two-piece set. This style originated from North Africa and the Arab world. They also come in an array of colors and patterns and suit women who prefer an easy, modest, and minimal look. It is becoming popular in USA for women who want to an easy, full coverage look.

Chador

The Chador is a long flowing cloth, and you wrap it around your body. It is mostly popular in Iran. It is full coverage with most colors being dark solid colors.

Why choose it: It covers the whole body. It is usually black and offers a very traditional look.

 Niqab

The Niqab consists of a face veil that covers everything except the eyes. The niqab can be worn with other hijab styles such as the khimar or shayla. This style is especially popular in Saudi Arabia and parts of South Asia. This offers extra modesty.

Abaya

An Abaya is a long, loose-fitting robe or dress. It is designed to cover the whole body, leaving only the face, hands, and feet visible.

While it is very popular in the Middle East, Muslim women all over the world wear it today. It is a beautiful way to practice modesty (hijab) and express religious identity while looking elegant.

Fortunately, the hijab has evolved and allowed for many different styles from various regions of the world, reflecting the cultural, regional, and individual differences between Muslim women. Each style of hijab has its own unique purpose and background whether its full coverage modesty, comfort, or a blend of fashion. In the end, choose what suits you and what give you comfort.
